Philips GoGear SA3115 is a petite and light 1GB MP3/video player in a appealing black color with silver trim.

Design:

The SA3115 has volume buttons on the right side, and a record/hold switch on the ledft.

There are separate menu and playlist buttons surrounding the main controls on the left and right.

You can use the playlist button for creating on-the-go playlists (without the need for software) when a song’s selected in the music list screen.

A 4-way navigator is in the center with a on/off, play pause button in the middle.

Bit diferent from other players is how you go through menus:the left and right buttons are used.

The screen is quite legible considering the tiny size of the player and is a QQVGA, 160 x 128 pixels, 65K colours screen type.

Interface
Philip’s GoGear interface is quite nice, with graphics reminiscent of iPods-al features are displayed as icns on the right, when you select a feature on the left a bigger version of the icon appears.
The left and right buttons in the center move between menu screens.
Music:

The SA3115 plays unprotected (non-DRM) MP3/WMA music files-2 popular file formats for digital music

Playback features are good-the basics of playing selecting songs is familar if you’ve used other players.

Information displayed is artist/album/song name.

Photos/Videos:

Photos are displayed in a scrolling list and are viewed in a landscape orientation, slideshow feature is basic but is effective in use.

Video playback is good with smooth motion and frame rates-it’s in .smv format (whch you need a Philips supplied converter-mine didn’t come with it,)
Transfer and charging:

A standard mini-USB cable is used, with UMS support-so even if Windows is supported officially by Philips, and you have, say a Mac you can still use it.

And it’s fast to transfer tracks, photos and video.

Sound Quality:

The SA3115’s sound quality is excellent, with very nice sound reproduction across mids and highs there’s a limited EQ feature:but only presets, no custom EQ.

I use SHE2610-Philips headphones of course and the sound was clearly heard and very nice level of bass.

Listening to Michael Jackson’s King Of Pop album, the sound was amazing clear and all ranges and virtually distortion free.

Other:

A 10 preset radio and voice recording. Auto tuning in radio presets is very quick.

Overall:

It’s a awesome MP3/video player that is easily put in your pocket-even smaller than iPod nano players. For $50, I was quite amazed at the SA3115:so I give it a score of 4/5 (because of the limited eq, I deducted a point).
