Did you know that there is a rock version of the Caprice in A minor No. 24 of Paganini made by Andrew Lloyd Webber, include as guest musicians: Rod Argent, Don Airey, Jon Hiseman, John Mole, Gary Moore, Barbara Thomson, Julian Lloyd Webber, among others a very nice CD BTW if you can give it a try...."Variations" is the tittle....

May I suggest:

1. Salvatore Accardo, 24 Capprici - most straightforward technique

2. Alexander Markov, 24 Capprici - most emotional, aggressive, violent interpretation. Lots of rubato (playing with tempi and markings). Live recording. You may also find this one bundled with recordings of Paganini's No.1 and No.2 recording.

3. Itzhak perlman, 24 Capprici - smoothest richest cleanest interpretation

I'm not sure what labels these guys are under, but I do know there are multiple releases of the exact same recording under different labels for at least Alexander Markov, so the case may be the same. Just do some browsing for these guys. If you like kicking back and relaxing, Perlman manages to do some beautifully smooth things with the caprices. Accardo just plays them as they are written and does so with superior technique. Markov is by far the wildest, adding improvisiation and rubato to the caprices, with INCREDIBLE left hand pizzicato, just as the great master Paganini was known to do.

I personally like Markov the best; he captures the true essence of this Romantic virtuoso.

I'm no classical megafan, but I have this one and it's jsut flat-out awesome. I mainly got interested in Paganini because guitar god Yngwie Malmsteen credits him as a great influence. Boy was I glad I did.

I have the version pictured lowest and I also have the Naxos version. Both are good versions, but I think I like the Markov version is Better.

KR, excellent choice.

On CD 1 with the 24 caprices, Markov will give you an eighty-minute head rush if you're a violinist.

CD 2 is just as insane, but it's Paganini's composition from a more artistic, melodic standpoint as opposed to the technical genius of the 24 capprici, CD1.

Keep going through the whole first CD, listen to them nonstop. When you hit the left-hand pizzicato of Caprice 24, you just won't look at amateur artists like vanessa mae the same ever again

I downloaded a 2CD set of Paganini "Works for Violin & Orchestra" that i really like. I'd like to buy it, but the files give no information about the performers, label, etc.

This is the downside of MP3.

Can anyone guess what this might have been? The track list was:

Disc 1:
1. Variazioni su 'Il carnevale di Venezia'
2. Larghetto con passione
3. Moto perpetuo
4. Andante amoroso
5. Variazioni di bravura sul Sol di 'Mose' di Rossini
6. Sonata per la gran viola

Disc 2:
1. Sonata Varsavia
2. Sonata Maria Luisa sul Sol
3. Polacca con variazioni
4. Balletto campestre. Variazioni su un tema comico

?????

I am unfortunately not familiar with any of those recordings; I am just familiar with Paganini's No.1 and No.2 concerto for violin. A great Juliard student, Adam Barnett-Hart, performed Paganini No.2 in Bozeman a few weeks ago. Incredible performance.

Gives me a frame of reference for auditioning audio equipment as well.
