Thinking about a potential downgrade to a pair of HD598's because as much as I have enjoyed the K712's, during competitive play they have a touch to much bass. I really liked the precise imaging, the massive soundstage, etc. I really would like to keep those qualities with a headphone that wouldn't lose details due to being lost in the bass. I am actually considering purchasing a HD800 just to solve all my problems.

Have you tried swapping the pads? The K701 pads on the K712 may bring down the bass, at least from what I've read from others.
