I think you'll notice a bigger jump w/ more RAM.
I had a white Macbook Core Duo 1 w/ 2GB DDR w/ 10.5.8. I moved to the latest 15" unibody Pro with SL and 4GB. Honestly, it's a little faster but not blazing. I don't have any 64-bit apps so I'm definitely not maxing out this new machine.

Yep, $400 version. It's working great for me.
I think RAM is the key here. For some reason SL seems to want lot's of it.
