After almost six years of faithful service, my primary portable headphones (Ultrasone HFI-78) passed away on me.  I'm looking to replace them with something similar.  I may even just repurchase the same model, but I've been mostly out of the new headphone market for the past five years, so I don't know if there's anything newer I should consider, or anything else I've overlooked.  I already have a bunch of different headphones, and will be using my Ultrasone DJ1 in the meantime.

I'm looking for something fairly similar to the HFI-780 - closed, portable, strong bass (prefer emphasis on the thump of mid-bass rather than sub-bass), bright, detailed, fast, responsive, sizable soundstage, V-shaped equalization signature, no need for amplification.  They'll be connected to an old unamped iPod and used mostly for metal, electronic music, and progressive rock.  I have other cans, sources, and amps, but this my convenience setup.  Something more comfortable would be cool, but isn't a deal-breaker.

The ideal replacement might be something like the Edition 8, which I've heard and loved, but I'm not willing to spend quite that much.  I'm aiming for around $150-$300.  I already have the DT770, DT990, D5000, Pro 900, DJ1, and XB500 for reference, plus others that wouldn't fit the role.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

I wonder if you should check out the B&W P7. It has a bass emphasis and good treble extension with lots of detail. It isolates well and is comfortable. Worth checking out. If you want a more traditional v-shaped can, you might as well look into the ATH-M50X, which fits that bill rather nicely and is portable. One more good one in your general price range is the MEZE 99 Classics. You might read about it and see what you think. Not sure if the soundsig will meet your requirements, but it may. A very nice portable headphone, nonetheless.
