Lately ive seen alot of talk about d66 vs PP. yet no one has done a direct comparison. I just traded my pair ofr some grados, but i borrowed my friends pair. here it goes, price aside, direct comparison.

(warning - this is my first 'review' and im not a good writer, so bear with me.)

Sources: Sony MZ707, Sony DEJ1000

Sony D66 eggo

Bass - This is the biggest complaint i seem to see about the eggos, wheres the bass?

Oh the bass is there, you just have to 'find' it. When i first got my eggos i thought the same thing, there is no bass. well after many hours of burn in, the bass seemed to come out. when it came out, i fell in love with it. not overpowering, not bomy, but just right. One thing i did do to my pair was the tape mod. this involves taking out the foam insert and putting a piece of electrical tape over a small hole over the driver.

what this did was increase the bass, it brought out the bass i little more. It made the bass alot better by basically pronouncing it more. my only complaint with it, every now and then at high volumes, the bass would become a little boomy, but not much at all.

Highs - this is the second biggest complaint ive seen here. the highs. some people say the can get so high, its to the pint of pain. that has never happened to me. granted i dont listen to much else but heavyier music, i do listen to some softer, 'highr' music. as far as im concerned, the highs are just as good as the bass. not to sharp, not sharp enough, just right.

Mids - once again, i have no complaint about the mids, to me they are just as balanced as the highs and lows.

Overall this is a very balanced can with the proper burn in. Great for portable use, and comfortable as hell.

Portapros

I got these not too long after i got my eggos. The only reason i got them was because they were $12 off of a user here.

Bass - the bass on the PP is ecentially a love/hate thing. I find it to be boomy, but tolerable. when im in the mood for trance, ill put on the PP's. for pretty much anything else id prefer the eggos. What the bass does on alot of music is drowns other parts out.

Highs - the best way to desbribe this is to quote a user here...

'disturbing lack of treble'

its pretty bad. one thing that does help with this is to cut a small hole in the pads. when this is done, some of the treble is let out, and it sounds much better.

Mids - same as treble basically.

Overall, it seems like i am bashing the PP's, but i really am not. The bass on them is a little to up front and the mids and highs get drowned out.

With the pad mod, everythign seems to fall into place, when the hole is there, everything gets better.

Direct Comparison

Bass: The eggos bass, after alot of burn in, is not as upfront, but much tighter. Stock PP's the bass is too boomy, but after a little, easy mod, it gets better.

PP for more upfront bass, eggo for tighter, cleaner bass.

Highs: The highs on the eggos are extravagent. The PP highs get drowned out by the bass.

Eggo wins.

Mids: Once again the mids get drowned out on the PP's, but once the mod is done it gets better.

Eggos wins again with warm balanced mids.

Comfort: Eggos wins this, but not by much. the eggo goes all over the ear which evetually makes it more comfortable, but both feel like they dissapear on your ears after 2 min.

WINNER: Eggos. overall everything is presented better, but the PP's just cant compare in the mid and high sections. but onc again, you cant go wrong with either.

If i forgot anything tell me.

Mods feel free to edit anything you see.

I hope you liked my firast attempt at a 'review'

Yes, that was a nice comparison.

Good job mclaren.

To me it's no suprise that a $100 can ousts one that is 1/3 of the cost. Compared to higher cans I agree with your asessments that the Portapro's bass is boomy (though fun for electronica) and the rest gets drowned out causing the phones to sound rather murky. KSC-35's improve vastly on this. I'm going to try cutting some holes in the pads and stretching the headband more which ought to bring it closer to the KSC-35's sound.

i dont have any 35's so i cant talk about them, but on the PP's the pads held in so much. It wasnt quite night and day when i put the holes in, but after i did, i could stand them.

Its almost like the eggos are senns, laid back, while the PP's are grados, up front, with alot of bass.

Excellent review, mclaren. Your findings pretty much follow mine. The D66, to my ears, are much more balanced sounding than the Porta Pros, which are a bit bassy. But I have a fondness for the Porta Pros, since I purchased my first pair in 1986. They fit me like an old pair of shoes.
Thanks for sharing.

Something I'd like to put in is a comparison between the D66's, Q55SL's, and G72's using Mega Bass 2 on my MZ-S1

D66SL: sounds bloated and terrible
G72LP: Just sounds bad
Q55SL: Actually sound the best in this mode, unless it is overly bassheavy music

so if you like megabass "2" then I'd advise against using it with the eggos

I own both the PortaPros and the Eggos and you have taken the words out of my mouth with that review (although no mods done to my Eggos).

Great review!

rizmu are the portapros that much darker than ksc-35's? cause i find my ksc-35's still too dark, although a bit better without pads. god i think i would hate the porta pros.

mclaren20, good review.

ranting meow...

with a good source, the eggos can cream the ksc35's. i find my ksc35's too boomy. some people prefers dark BOOM BOOM sound and choose the koss portables or the v6 over the eggos. but neutral dynamics, wide soundstage and proper instrumental positioning are more important to me. even with crystal method or nine inch nails, the eggos are soooo freakin sweet (d-e900, d-311, dr7) and your source or proper synergy is important. as some members here quoted "crap in = crap out".

anyway, the koss portables are good value for their prices. but if you can crank a few more bucks....

the ex70's have a 'bad' boomy, the bass on the PP's is by all means bearable, unlike on the sonys.
