Hi there,

I'm in Manathan (coming from Paris, France) for the rest of the week for business.

Anyone can recommend a hifi store with good headphones assortiment? I would try to check it if I find the time. I would especially like to hear grados. They barely can be found in France...

Thanks in advance,
Pierre

Grado Labs

J and R should have a good selection

B&H

Manhattan

(they have the Sony CD3000 for $419, just as a reference)

if you're into photography, you may want to check out Willoughby's, 32nd St between 6 and 7th avenues; olsen camera 32nd St and 7th Ave/Broadway; Wall Street Camera (in Wall Street area); 47th Street Photo. The Diamond district is 45th St between 5th and 8th. remember these streets on 5th Avenue: 37, 47, 57: Taylor's, Bloomingdales(?), (?). The Sony Store is at 55th St and Lexington Avenue (They should carry everything). A good steak house is Wollensky & Wollensky, 46th & 3rd. if you like atmosphere, there's a nice little restaurant at about 67th St and Central Park West (it's inside the park). say hello to trump towers for me, 56 & 5th (and the world's most expensive jewelry store accross the street)

skippy,

is that the old "Stereo Exchange" that was by the World Trade Centre (3 blocks north, west of Chambers), or the 'new' one north of Canal?

Where's Harvey's? I know I've been there, I just can't place it on the map. Harveys - 46th Street, between 5th and 6th? (otherwise known as "stereo alley". now known as "computer part alley"). nice high end stuff.

Stereo Exchange is on Broadway a block north of Houston.

Harvey is on 45th, a few doors west of 5th.

The diamond district does not extend west of 6th Avenue, but there are places on 45th through 48th streets.

J and R has a large selection of phones, but many are not hooked up and the singnal to the others is not great.

Probably obvious, but the Sony store only carries Sony. Some nice toys there to demo, but they generally sell at full list.

skippy,

ha. ha. i forgot about those two buildings (one houses Marsh & MaClenen from 6th to 7th avenues, but i never forgot the bookstore on the lower level). yes, i should have said that the Diamond District is between 5th and 6th avenues. I guess i was thinking of 46th or 47th Street Photo being closer to 8th avenue. (What can I say, it's been a few years since I've been there. And I still can't get over how 42nd Street has changed. Last time I was there I felt that I was in a Blade Runner movie.)

I wonder if any of the hi-fi stores on 14th street carry hi-end headphones.

Man, i still miss Houston, Bleecker and DeLancy.

isn't there a big stereo store on 57th street (Rabsons) between 6th and 7th? Or did they turn that into a bible store? (Right opposite the Russian Tea Room).

whatever you do stay away from the camera stores with the chinese figureens in the window. they are overpriced stores.

for affordable hi-fi/dj stuff there's Queen/King audio on 8th avenue and about 37th street, and a DJ store just south of Canal on Chambers (i believe).

and yes, that's the Stereo Exchange store that I was thinking of.

Pierre,

the best bet is to open up the yellow pages, look under "stereo", "audio", and "hi-fi" and make a few calls.

Don't think so

Nope, and I believe the Russion Tea Room is gone too.

good advice

Chambers runs east-west, parallel with Canal.

There is a Hi-Fi store uptown a few blocks from the MET that carries Grados, but I hear they are real jerks

zowie,

thanks. i believe it was Church St, not Chambers. Although there were quite a few hi-fi stores on Chambers at one time. Stereo Exchange was a few blocks down from there. And the DJ store at Church (just below Canal) probably doesn't carry good headphones; they probably only carry DJ headphones, disco lights, amps, bullet tweeters, etc. And right on Canal there were a few mid-end hi-fi shops. One place carries Tascam equipment. It's where I bought my horn midranges, speakers, cd players, cassette players, horn tweeters, speaker connectors and port tubes. This is what I call "bargain alley". They have to move a lot of inventory to afford the rents, unlike Harvey's which is all top shelf stuff. Need 18" subwoofers for your car? Go to canal street.

Pierre,

Please tell us how your shopping experience went in NYC. Good luck in finding a bargain.

you can actually find lots of discontinued sony stuff around chinatown, though not much else in terms of quality cans. a couple years back apheared gave the address to a place that had some e484 buds, but they were sold out when i got there. i remember a couple places having some sony cd1000 and cd1700, but i never liked sony cans. there are a couple of cool hi-fi shops in chinatown, but none of them seem to carry good cans from what i can remember.
