Hi,

I've been looking for a pair of phones for some time now, and I've been eying these for some time now.

To the question then, I've understood that for these phones you need an AMP and maybe an external DAC for them to live up to their full potential. The problem is that I'm a university student so money isn't really lying around at my place, do you guys think that I would be able to enjoy the AKG k701s, or HiFi phones in general, running them straight out from my desktop, ie without an AMP/DAC? Then in a year or so add one and begin to understand why you guys spend so much money on this stuff ;P This considering that the most expensive phones I've owned are a pair of PortaPros and that I have never listened regularly with HiFi phones. Or should I forget this and wait until I've saved up enough money to be able to purchase both phones and AMP/DAC at the same time?

I do understand that this is an odd question to ask as hearing is relative as someones preferences might not be the same as others. I'm going to try to find a place where I could demo them, but still any help and advice you can spare me would be much appreciated!

Hi Jukkis,

I can recommend you some nice sound cards that can drive them:

1. NI Kontrol 1 ,very nice bass.
2. Prosonus Firebox, any other Prosonus models will do just fine.
3. Apogee Duet, or the Apogee mini dac.

Some of the portable mini dac/amps will drive them as well.
