Hi -- Sorry if this is a little off the subject of the forum, but before I go off to some strange board where I don't know anyone . . .

I'm having a problem with an RCA amp from the 50s. (Probably irrelevant but tube complement is 35w4 50b5 12av6).

I am getting distortion at low volumes. Distortion decreases and then mostly goes away as volume is increased toward full output.

Can someone point me in the direction of what the problem is? I have no EE knowledge, but I'm capable of soldering in a new cap or resistor if its something like that.

Much obliged.

I should add that I don't think the volume pot is the problem, and I'm only looking for an answer like "typically means time to change tubes" or "typically a bad resistor" or something, so I can make an informed decision about trying new parts or sending it out for service.

Thanks again.
