Hello head-fi'ers, this is pretty much my first post here, nice to meet you all, I'm writing from the northern part of sweden (which means excuse my poor english). Here's my little "problem" (buying new headphones aren't exactly what I would call problematic in a negative way, but it does present a problem when you're kinda picky
Here's the about me section (skip if you wish, but it gives some motivational background to the query)
What first got me interested in sound quality, not JUST music was a headphone that's not exactly highly regarded here, but I nevertheless had much fun with: the Bose triport on-ear. They were lightyears ahead of my apple default plugs that came with my old nano. I've got a full time job at a large electronics chain here in sweden, which among many other things includes managing the headphones section, which I found to be best and most fulfilling part of my job. I guess it was unavoidable that my inner audiophile was awakened after this much exposure to all sorts of great headphones! (we carry Senns, AKG's, Bose, Fischer audio as well as most mainstream brands like Skullcandy, Urbanears, Wesc and Koss) At home I currently own the Heed Canamp - AKG K701 combo which has REALLY opened my ears to what headphones can deliver in forms of pure audio quality. No longer does my old Bose's feel as accurate and thrilling, only bloated and bassy. I now want to sell them and get good quality headphones for my 40 minute (single trip) bus commute to work.
Here comes the actual problem:
At work, we've just got word that we can now get Audio Technica's headphones which I've heard a lot of good noise about, and I could probably get a good price on these. There seems to be a lot of good models to choose from. We haven't started ordering them in yet, and since we mostly deal with mainstream consumers, we're probably just getting the cheapest models from AT to start with.
I've also got the opportunity to buy a cheap set of new Sony NC-500D noise-canelling headphones (about 150-200USD). I've tried them at work and I like the noise-cancelling effect (remember I commute for a total of around 1.5 hours every day) although the sound quality is not THAT good.
Here's the question:
should I buy the "cheap" NC-500D or wait until we start getting AT in stock and see if I can get a hold of their better models, noise cancelling is NOT a must, and if so which ones do you recommend?
I use a Ipod touch 3rd gen. and I would prefer not getting an amp if at all possible.
My music is varied, everything from Doom, sludge, progressive metal, rock, bluegrass, female singers, some electronica, which means the headphones has got to be good allrounders. My emphasis tends to lean towards the heavier music when I commute since I have a good setup at home for classical and acoustic music.
My budget is in the 500USD range considering the pending sale of the Bose.
I'm not really interested in IEM's in this particular instance.
thanks for such an amazing forum!
