New Comcast 250GB/mo Bandwidth Limit

I use uTorrent and even when setting the max upload to 10 kb/S I register 100 kb/s using a bandwidth meter.


I did the math and 100 kb/s puts one over 250GB/mo.

How can I do torrents without all the wasted bandwidth?

You must be doing some incredibly serious torrenting to be going over 250GB a month. Makes me wonder just what you're transferring. That's eight gigabytes a day! Five megabytes per minute!

You didn't read my post.


The actual bandwidth used is 10x what utorrent max limits are.


In otherwords I download a 10 MB file with utorrent and my bandwidth meter logs 100 MB. Same for uploading.

Install a bandwidth meter and you will probably find you are over the limit too.
Just leaving utorrent open with a max upload of 10 kbs and zero downloading will put you over the limit.

Yeah, this has has been worrying me for awhile. I go over 250Gs easy with torrents. You'd think 8Gs a day would be enough, but I'm a greedy SOB. I did hear that they'll only ban you after the second warning, and that they're mainly targeting people already on their "top users" list. Either way, if they tell me to go screw off, I'll try and switch to FIOS. (Though I'm afraid Verizon may someday implement a limit as well)

This is also bad for people watch/download stuff legit, HD videos and music can add up real quick.

In my area, unfortunately, Comcast is the only option. Comcast is easily the worst internet provider I've ever had the displeasure of dealing with. Ourageous prices for extremely small amounts of bandwidth, and extremely inconsistent connectivity and connection speeds.

I thought the limit was for the amount of data transfered, not the bandwidth you're using. Can you tell us how the math was being done and why would utorrent log multiply bandwidth you didn't actually use?

Thats what I am asking.

Download "Bandwidth Meter Pro".

Then download a 100 MB file using utorrent and you will see that you hit comcast for 1GB !

It is very very easy to go over 250 GB per month.

Yeah, at home i have 2gb shared with my sister!

Although i think my mum got it wrong, cos I must go over that browsing alone, because i used to rack up 100mb a day easy after school without an hour online on MOH Allied Assault!

My vista lappy doesn't seem to like DU Meter, it isnt keeping the logs, they go once they are a day old, doesnt save itself under the totals or anything! Worked fine on my XP desktop when i used to use it. I dont anymore, It only worries me using it, and anyway haven't gone over with it logging, or without, so i reckon its 5gb, not 2gb.

I would know if i went over it, mum would go nuts, BT add 50p for every mb over the lmit to the bill or something stupid!

Comcast sounds like the deal i saw the other day, Tiscali i think 512kb with a 5gb limit i think for £15/m! Madly expensive!

Our BT is expensive at about £15-17 a month but it is 6mb i think, and a 5gb limit, but the contract has ended now, and we can get a faster line here now, 12mb max i think, but a deal as a non-o2 mobile customer we can get 8mb here with o2, and no limits for £12 a month...Cheap for the UK

I hate contracts, we have been paying FAR too much for our crap package for over 6 months, maybe a year or so now!

Cant wait to upgrade. Bored of all my music and last.fm gives me great suggestions, but i cant just hop online and get some music like i can at dads (not there often enough to run a bunch of torrents on his 20mb no-limit line)... Will be listening to music, on last.fm and downloading lots of new music soon! What more could you want!

What's comcast charge, anyway?

i'm curious because my fiber provider charges me $40/mo for a line provisioned at 15mbps with a 100gb-per-floating-30-day-period quota. For $60/mo i can bump that up to 50mbps with a 500gb quota.

yeah, those speeds are symmetrical, and yeah, they really have enough bandwidth to guarantee it.

So I'm curious - if comcast is saying 250gb/mo for $40, maybe some arm twisting can be done.
