On Monday, September 23rd, Microsoft will formally unveil its next generation Surface tablets :

"It is expected that Surface Pro 2 will come in 256GB and 512GB variants as well, which will cost $1300 and $1700 respectively. Microsoft launched a 256GB model of the Surface Pro earlier this year, but it has never offered a 512GB model before, if this happens, it’ll be a first for the company and its Surface Pro tablet."

512 Gb,  this an Audiophile dream come true compared to the maximum 128 Gb of the iPAD or other DAP. Expecially since the Tablet provides a REAL USB port (compared to the limited Apple's & Android USB port with all the 16bits limitations).

So a  512 Gb Tablet + a very high quality battery operated external DAC/AMP may become the ULTIMATE portable audio solution (no use of the tablet's internal DAC/AMP).

Question :

- Are there some good music File manager and player available for the Windows Surface  tablets ?

- Can they play 24/192 files and "export them" through USB to an external DAC WITHOUT Down-SAMPLING to 16 bits like  Android & IOS Device VERY stupidly do ?

- Will we need to load also an add on like AUDIRVANA to have bit-perfect play back through the external DAC ?

So... in other words, can we make from a Surface Tablet a "portable Aurender Audiophile Music server" ? (I have a battery operated RedWineAudio Bellina DAC/Balanced AMp waiting for a very good source)

thanks

Since you are talking about the Surface Pro 2 you can install any software or drivers etc that you could on any windows based computer system.

I use my current surface pro and surface rt with Xbox music connected to a USB dac. Very happy with that setup.

I tried surface pro and, with 1 Tb storage, it is a very very good option as ROON Server, with USB out to HUGO or other portable DAC/Amp... I just wish it had 2 USB port to be able to add an external SSD.
