I just bought a Samsung 226bw S panel from Circuit City.

I've had my old 21" crt for 7 years, so this is my first lcd. At first I hooked the new lcd up using analog and it kind of scared me. Switched to DVI and found a tweak guide at hardocp forums, now it's much better. =) Widescreen takes some getting used to, but it's sexy. Haven't even gamed with it yet, which seems to be where the Samsung excels. If you don't intend to game often, I would say go with the Viewsonic. Of course, I have no experience with the Viewsonic. Might help if you can go play around with them at a local store and compare.

My reason for buying from Circuit City was the price at the time and their 14 day return policy. I figured if it had dead pixels or I was unlucky enough to get an A panel I would just take it back. I got lucky.

Haven't noticed any ghosting. I'm happy with mine, just hope it lasts me another 7 years. LOL

I have the same model from Frys, picked it up a month or so ago. This my first LCD monitor. I'm very happy with the picture quality and style.

I have the Gateway 24" and the Samsung 226bw. The Gateway is better for text and the web because of the larger size and a slightly better picture, but the Samsung is best for Gaming.
Out of the box with default settings will at first might disappoint you, you must use a good video card with DVI, Geforce7600 GS or greater, and adjust your game control brightness/contrast/video quality...and your there...an amazing monitor for $350. You can see bullets flying at you never saw before.
Also, these monitors were really made to be driven by a good dual prossesor with at least two gigs of memory and Vista.

You didnt specify the models of Samsung and Viewsonic you are comparing, but I have the Samsung 226BW (S panel) running off the analog connection from the onboard 965G graphics chip and I am very happy with it.
Viewsonic is also very good, some of their models are a little more expensive because they have speakers and ipod docking stations.
I think both of these makes are a step above the Acer screens which I see everywhere, in performance and in general looks.
Google for reviews, you will probably find a lots of into to help your decision.

viewsonic is great. however they get all of their screens from acer; i'd suggest just buying an acer. not online though, you'll want to go to best buy or circuit city and test for dead pixels on the spot. i still use a crt but if i ever go flat-panel (see: when i buy speakers) it'll be acer.

get the samsung, hands down it destroys the viewsonic 22", i've looked at them both for over an hour at the local CC, and the viewsonic just doesn't match up

if you want testimonials as to how much better this monitor is then any other 22" thats reasonably priced, just look at thread, yeah its hardforums, but their computer geeks, and have an 80 page thread devoted to this model

My Viewsonic 22" VG2230WM just came yesterday. No dead pixels and it looks seriously hott, but $20 more for 2ms? What was I thinking? I should have been more thorough.

sweet, thx guys.

that samsung you recommended is looking pretty tempting. now, will my computer be capable of 'running' that monitor? i have 1gb or ram and my video card is 125mb. my processor is AMD's Athlon 64 processor 3200+. i wasn't aware that monitors required much.

I'm not completely sure. I read one account on Newegg of one of the 22 inchers being so demanding that it fried an older graphics card. I imagine that the recommended resolution for these monitors might be taxing on a card with less than 256 mb, but since you aren't likely to play games in that resolution maybe it's not an issue.
