I purchased an AudioMinor iMod 5.5G with CF card storage from another Head-Fi'er on the Head-Fi classifieds forum. It was supposed to be "in awesome condition", however, when it arrived, it wasn't working.
When I powered it on, it displayed "Connect to your computer. Use iTunes to restore". That's what it did the first time I turned it on and all it has ever done when not plugged in. The battery was nearly dead. It warned me to plug it in right away, which seemed odd, given that the seller said the current battery life was 15 hours.
Windows asks to format the disc, but cannot complete the format. iTunes indicated that it has detected a corrupted device and that I need to restore. When I restored, the restore ran, the iPod rebooted, but does not show up in the source list. I can repeat the process, but sometimes only get the Windows format dialog and iTunes does not acknowledge the iPod's presence. The 2 or 3 times that I was able to get iTunes to run a restore, iTunes showed the iPod serial number like you would expect, but the storage capacity was shown as 0kb.
I uninstalled and reinstalled iTunes and that made no difference. My other iPod 5.5G syncs fine. I'm suspicious that, perhaps, the CF card became dislodged during shipment. Everything points to the fact that neither Windows nor iTunes seems to recognize the storage.
I am not an iPod technician. The seller has been helpful in suggesting things to try, none of which have helped. I am hoping someone who is knowledgeable can help me sort this out, so I don't end up with a $300 brick.
