The question is does the steel being ferrous make it a bad choice for a headphone cup? Does aluminum's inductance make it a bad choice?

Cups are usually non-magnetic, like wood or plastic, and when they include metal it usually is aluminum.

Agreed: Non-magnetic and lightweight are the keywords for driver cup material.

Inductance wouldn't play a part to?

Wouldn't making them as heavy as possible (like speaker cabinets) cut down on resonance, or is it more important for the cup to absorb?
