well... I bought a nec cdr-602 from ebay and it arrived with the case broken on the front and the back... I think it might still work, cant test it as I dont have any caddy's yet... anyone have any experience making alternate enclosures for these drives? maybe wood or metal... maybe removing a lot of the internals as well... an external PSU might be cool... I have a feeling it will work, but the power switch and the case are completely broken... and I dont really want (read as my wife doesnt want) to have open electronics as part of my system...

as a happy note... my pimeta just arrived as well and it looks sweet ass! I'm just about to hook it up for an extended listening session... cant wait

There was this thread regarding building a quaility PSU for it, you could get in touch with him maybe? Otherwise, you can just get one that will supply 5 & 12 V DC, it's pretty standard.

A case shouldn't be that hard to build though - doesn't the enclosure just contain the Internal version of the 602 CD drive like so:

PS: I hope you're having fun in the 'warmest' place in Ontario today (@ -18ºC ! ! ! ! !)

I purchased a 602 off ebay about a month ago, the front and back of mine was cracked. I super glued it, let it dry and sanded it down. I then primered that area so its completely invisible. Finally I painted it black with viynl dye(this works great). The wet paint doesnt build up around the buttons with this type of paint. I would post pics if someone wants to host them. It looks way better than the stock cream colored/white drives.

jhawk22... I can host them for you if you want... just email the pictures to philodoxATcanadaDOTcom... my email has a low size limit, but assuming I can at least recieve them, I can upload them and display them here for you...

so, I finally got the caddy out of the drive... it was stuck somehow and I needed to use needle nose pliers to pull it out, but once I got it out it works fine... I threw in a crappy CD (sise*) the first time just incase I didnt get it back... but it works great... I removed all the internal wiring that I could... basically everything that wasnt connected to the SPDIF and the RCA's (or part of the power supply)

I've been listening to it with my zu cable gede's connected to my maxed out pimeta... sounds very nice... cant wait for the DAC to arrive so I can really start having some fun... once the DAC does arrive, I'll try to do a review of the individual components and the system as a whole at some point...

edwood... try some needle nose pliers on yours and just yank on it

... if that doesnt work though, I would be interested in the case if your offer still stands

so... what kind of paint did you use? I think I will probably just build or use a found object as my enclosure... but I think I might paint the front face plate with that black... I like the look

Careful, that stuff is really toxic. Make sure there is plenty of ventilation, or at least wear a respirator mask.

True vinyl dye should not require primer. Just make sure to apply it with thin strokes. Don't lay it on thick.
