I thought this would be a fun and useful thread.  I'm new to Head-Fi but I have spent a good deal of time here.  I plan to study Nanotechnology and am really excited to see some nanotech showing up in audio gear.
I have a small list of products that I'm aware of.  If anyone knows anything like this going on please post.
 
Vsonic GR07 [diaphragms made with over a hundreds layers of approx 0.001μM bio-cellulose]
     I only have 3 sets of IEMs and this is one of them.  It takes over 100 hrs to break in the diaphragms, but once they get there the GR07 sound quality is unreal.  These IEMs are the only product I've ever owned that really gave me the feeling that I am using some alien technology.  I had starting listening to Amon Tobin - Foley Room on my UE Triple.fi 10s and I didn't find the music too engaging.. I finished listening to the album on the GR07 and I now see Amon Tobin as one of the greatest artists in music and sound.
     I imagine the multi-layer bio-cellulose have a flexible elasticity that vibrates very precisely to the multiple ripples in the waveforms.  Everything about Vsonics GR07 is fantastic, from the cable, accessories, comfort, and of course sound.  Vsonics manufactures OEM parts, so they have already been in the business of making the internal parts for a while.  GR07 goes for around $150 - 170 USD and they perform as if they cost twice that.
 
JVC FXT90 [dual dynamic driver with one carbon diaphragm and one carbon nanotube diaphragm]
    These look really interesting.  They don't use a crossover, instead the different material diaphragms are supposed to put of different frequencies.  I have read about carbon nanotubes and I they are said to have elasticy as well as durability and a great conductor.  If anyone has experience with these please share.
 
HiFiMAN RE-262 / RE-272 [both have titanium coated diaphragms]
     Not exactly nanotech, but there must be something to what they are doing because I understand these are great IEMs.  I have not heard either so I can't say for myself.
 
Sony MDR-EX1000 [16mm liquid crystal polymer diaphragm]
   I don't know much about these, just recently came across the specs and realized they have the liquid crystal polymer diaphragms.
 
Unique Melody Merlin [5-driver hybrid custom IEM. dual armature highs, dual armature low, and a dynamic driver for bass]
    To me this looks like the direction more companies should go.  An armature driver will reproduce a signal faithfully, but without moving air like a dynamic it's difficult to really have the same impact.  We experience music through touch as well as hearing, at a live performance one can almost grab the rumbling bass.  I personally find it easier to immerse myself into sound when a part of the sound is making noticeable physical contact with me.
 
AKG K3003 [universal hybrid IEM]
   It really is worth going to the AKG website just to look at the way these are engineered.  A dynamic driver behind a dual armature.  There are some nice diagrams of their design and some videos.
 
AUDIOFLY AF78 [soon to be released hybrid driver universal IEM]
    Nice looking IEM from a new company.  If they end up sounding as good as they claim, these will probably create quite a buzz.
 
RADIUS has two different IEM sets that feature a dual dynamic diaphragm matrix.  Utilizing a larger diaphragm to handle the lows placed behind a smaller handling the highs, however [if I'm correct] they both use the same driver.
 
Any other IEMs, headphones, amps, or anything interesting that does something different than the usual would be interesting to hear about.  Any comments or reviews on the products listed would be excellent.

Years later I will now go ahead and be the first to repost on this thread I attempted to start.
 
Obviously many more headphone and audio products based on emerging technologies have surfaced since, I'm not going to list any of them at this point as this thread has never been posted on since it originated.
 
I am adding this post so that possibly this thread will show up in the forums and be noticed. The audio world keeps spinning, and getting faster than ever. This thread can be a resource for those who would like to summarize many of the most innovative products and new technologies in one place.

Here are a few IEMs that have tried something different (as far as driver design is concerned), off the top of my head.
 
  1. RHA T20 : Dual coil diaphragm

The DualCoil™ dynamic driver technology in the T20 and T20i features a micro annular, or ring magnet. The central void in the magnet allows the addition of a second copper-clad aluminium voice coil. The two coils are positioned in concentric formation with the magnet, one internally and one externally. Both coils are attached to a specially engineered diaphragm that features an additional apex. The audio signal is separated when it reaches the driver housing, splitting it into two sets of frequencies - bass/lower midtones and upper midtones and treble frequencies. Each signal is directed to one of the voice coils, the upper half of the frequency range to the outer coil and lower half to the inner coil. The coils operate independently, each with their own electromagnetic field reacting to the magnet's static magnetic field. Due to the additional apex, the voice coils are able to manipulate the different areas of the diaphragm to generate sound waves.

Here are some interesting technologies in earphones in Korean market that I found, mostly focus on the design of driver, not about material of diaphragm. 
 
  1. thanks for this contribution! I had been considering purchasing the RHA T20 or the ATH-CK9/10. I did get to briefly demo the T20 (Apple Store actually has a demo box for their IEMs and will let you try them out, they even provide fresh tips from a sealed package) but I didn't get to have a thorough listen to many songs and was also loud in there. How do you feel either of these stack up with hybrid configuration or multi-driver armatures?

Tarnum, thanks for adding these unique and very obscure IEMs. I believe the Macaw GT100S has an inverted driver similar to the one you posted. The oBravo erib-2a looks very interesting, this is also the first time I've heard of oBravo and the brand itself looks pretty impressive as well.
