I've just joined this forum and needed some advice.

I recently received some Monster Jamz for my birthday, and although the quality seems fine and they will need burn time, I'm not sure that my current mp3 player is powerful enough for them. At present I'm using a Cowon iaudio 9 16gb with Klipsch image s4's, which I've been using for about 9 months, and the sound is ok. I have tried the jamz (pre burn) with my current mp3 (cowon i9) and the sound is just not there, really weak even at high volume, a bigger improvement with my old Sony NWZ S545 though.

Although I'm not convinced they will be better than what I have at present, I do at least want to try to use the Jamz and get the best sound possible; so should I upgrade my mp3 player, and if so, to what? I don't want to use an amp if I can avoid it, but if I really have to, what is a small enough and good enough recommendation?

Thanks.

your source is all right IMO, though a portable amp might give it more juice, are you sure it's the lack of power, or do you just simply dislike the sound sig of the phones?

I can attest to the lacking power with the i9. I've been using my i9 and have the EQ active with only negative numbers on the bands so as to not add any extra distortion...which lowers the power output even more(at 40/40 volume). I use my XM5 amp which is quite powerful and easily makes up for this. The SQ from the HP out is not the problem, just the power.

I think the phones will take some getting used to, I have been playing around with the EQ to find the right balance but am finding it frustrating, either not enough base or too empty sound wise. Whenever I think I've found the right EQ, the next track sounds rubbish!! Quality of track varies enormously. I might go for a portable mini amp to see if that makes any difference...any suggestions? Cheers.

Does your Monster Jamz have the control talk function (3 ring plug)? Or just a straight audio 2 ring plug?

I noticed that i9 is not compatable with the 3 ring control talk plug when plugged all the way in. I tried it with MMDTrumpet, and I have to pull the plug out a bit for the sound to come out correctly otherwise it sonds like i am listening to echos which might be why u feel like it's not powering ur iem correctly.

Are you sure you have a good seal? I found the included tips didn't seal very well. I use Sony hybrids and get a great seal. Lack of volume and having to fiddle with an EQ for each song makes me suspect a bad seal. They are very easily driven from an iPhone or even a first gen iPod Touch.

I think your best bet is to pick up a Fiio E6.
