EDIT: OMG I messed up. I meant to be replying to http://www.head-fi.org/t/430688/home-made-iems. Could any mods please help me move this over, or just delete this thread and I'll repost properly on that thread? Please PM me if anything changed! Also guys, don't reply to this thread yet, that'll just give the mods more work to do :p

Hi guys, lurker crawling out. Absolutely love the amount of helpful resources on here, been reading for hours. Large post ahead =/

My FA ADBA-02s have been with me for about 5-6 years now, I got them since release. Reterminated a few times, but it's still going strong. I'd say they were my first venture into high(er)-end audio. Upgraded to a pair of CA H8P early last year, whose maker (piotrus-g), to my surprise, is actually extremely active in this thread.

So few days ago I've been itching to upgrade my DBAs. Don't really wanna reshell them into customs, they're my mid-tier pair, so the plan is to switch them out into a se535 shell (http://www.aliexpress.com/item/Repair-Parts-Housing-Shell-Crust-For-Shure-SE535-Noise-Sound-Isolating-Earphone/32333843512.html?ws_ab_test=searchweb201556_0,searchweb201602_2_10017_10021_507_10022_10020_10009_10008_10018_10019_101,searchweb201603_9&btsid=d4c7dcfa-9330-4a8f-b4f6-989ed15f626d)

After some hands-on prying and research, I've found out that they are the good old TWFKs, with a crossover (no idea if this is a resistor or capacitor, would appreciate if anyone could educate me :D)

If my eyes are seeing right, the current wiring should be:

I'm not sure which is which, but if my understanding of crossovers are correct, the crossover should be a high pass, with the WBFK below, and a "low frequency FK" on top?

Thing is, I don't really know how to proceed.

  1. I really like the analytical sound of the DBA, so I probably won't change anything on the TWFK set-up.
  2. I'll probably make it a pseudo dual-bore,with the TWFK on one, and the woofer on the other. 2 sound tubes squeezed into the housing's large bore.
  3. Should I add a Knowles CI, a HVODTEC, a Sonion 3300, a Dynamic, or something else?
  4. I like dynamic's bass and tonality, they give a different "feel" than BA bass, but I'm afraid it'll be too hard to tune.
  5. If I were to add a dynamic, how can I source a good driver? BAs tend to be easily identifiable by model no., but dynamics are usually unlabeled and generic, with no spec sheets.
  6. I've seen a few posts about crossover orders, phase corrections, and acoustic tube lengths, but honestly I'm completely out of my depth. Could anyone please help me with this design aspect?
  7. About physically securing the components, is epoxy the right way to go? Are there specific kinds of epoxy to get?

I'm sorry about the huge chunk here, but I thought it might be better to consolidate my stuff into fewer posts. Would really appreciate tons for any comments and replies!
