minidisc portable better than ipod nano

I've an old Sharp MD-SR 75, a Sony MZ-G750 and a HiMD MZ-NH700. While all of these sound decent, better than the Panasonic CT-700 MP3/PCDP I have. I personally prefer the sound from my Zen Micro and iPod Shuffle with decent Lame encoded MP3's 192-320kps. I've tried HiSP (256kps) PCM and (352kps) and SP (292kps) from optical and I still prefer the MP3 players. That said thats with my own ABX testing and not very good earphones. Some have suggested with better phones it swings in ATRAC's favour. I still use the HiMD MZ-NH700 for recording but for sheer ease of use and SQ the ZM and Shuffle win hands down for me.

It has also been suggest that optical out from a decent deck to SP (292kps) is superior than encoding 256kps-352kps via SonicStage and USB. I don't believe that myself, but I haven't heard it first hand. The MZ-RH1 looks lovely. Still has some ease of use issues, with SS/HiMD, but theres a ton of improvements. I noted Mp3 sampling frequency of 32/44.1/48 kHz etc. I'd buy one if it was a lot cheaper. I hope to pick up a NH1 2nd hand when the RH1 gets released.

Best of all, try a lossless file. Nanos and Shuffles sound terrific with those.

Apple's flash-based players sound quite good with good encoding.

used to have a 5G with alac and a iaudio m3 with flac. then i listened to the Sharp DR7. still awed by the dr7. no contest.

Lots of people seem to love the Sharp MD's with the 1-bit digital amplifier and 4-pole earphone plug. Never heard it myself. Still are expensive now. Awkward as heck to get your music on and off them though.

Still love the sound of my old Sharp MS722 (1999), especially the bass option, then my other 2 mp3 players, Archos Gmini120 and Zen Vision:M.
If only the MD can contains more songs, then i wouldn't buy any mp3 player. The Sharp still get at least 8h of battery life.

Thats what I said. But my point was that even a Sharp output amp on an Ipod would not sound as good as Atrac's Acoustic shaping.
