I'm still in the process of researching for a new MD recorder cuz the one i have is a piece of noisy garbage

Has anyone used these combo units? How well do they work? My main worry point is whether or not they're reliable, i like the idea of dubbing at 4X from CD to MD, do you think the sound quality would suffer the same fate as dubbing CD to Tape?

TIA

Not sure about sound quality but I remember reading somewhere (sorry to be so vague!) that the fast dubbing was not compatible with LP2 and LP4.

You may want to check that if you use those compression rates.

With the Sony units (I have the MXD-D5C) you can dub from CD to MD at 4x speed in normal, LP2 or LP4 modes. THe unit uses Sonys latest Type R ATRAC coding (basically version 4.5 with a recalculation module that slightly improves the higher frequency response), but it only uses TYpe R in the standard mode, if using higher speed dubbing the unit uses version 4.5.
I've had mine for about 9 months and haven't had a bit of trouble with it. It has a 5 cd changer adn the MD drive, and I've recorded several hundred MD's with it.

I think I read somewhere that in order to get the ATRAC-R encoding (I assume you're talking about the Sony units), you have to encode still in realtime. In SP 4X dubbing would be inferior, although I'm not sure by how much or if you could tell a difference. Now if I could just remember where it was that I read that.....until I can find my source take this with a little grain of salt.

hehe, thanks for the info bearwise, i was looking at the Sony MXD-D40 model. Now, your model sounds much more sweet with the 5 cd changer!
