Hi,

I mainly listen to Black Metal, Rock, Classical but now started to dip a bit into Jazz.

I like Tord Gustavsen Trio's Being There a lot and I'm looking for some similar stuff. Is there anything out there you can recommend?

Thanks in advance!

Try Brad Mehldau's earliest discs, Introducing…, The Art of the Trio, Vol. 1 and 3 (skip 2), maybe the solo disc Live In Tokyo. Gustavsen's sound kinda comes out of Mehldau, with subtle Rachmaninoff stuff thrown in sometimes.

Also, perhaps you wanna look into Gustavsen's labelmate Marilyn Crispell. Storyteller is great, and it's got that same ghostly ECM production stuff going on.

Probably most like Tord Gustavsen is E.S.T. - the Esbjörn Svensson Trio, who have a similar song based lyrical feel to composition. Good places to start might be Seven Days of Falling or Viaticum. Also Brad Mehldau can be similar, but is not as close in feel as E.S.T. - try Day is Done which is fairly recent, and one of his best. Label stablemates the Marcin Wasilewski Trio are also close in feel to Gustavsen at times (partly because they don't mind using artists like Prince and Bjork as sources for material) - January is the better of their 2 albums. If you want something rockier still (meaning less concerned with atmosphere and tunefulness) try The Bad Plus (Prog or These are the Vistas are both fine). Trio Töykeät may also be of interest - again a more rock based approach at times.

If its the trio sound you like and don't mind trying something more conventionally jazz based, then also add in Keith Jarrett (maybe Standards Volume 1), Bobo Stenson (War Orphans) or the granddaddy of them all - Bill Evans (Waltz for Debbie).

I have Marilyn Crispell Trio - Storyteller, Bobo Stenson Trio - War Orphans,Manu Katche - Playground and Wasilewski, Kurkiewicz, Miskiewicz - Trio.

Recommendations are spot on. You should also get Tord Gustavsen Trio - The Ground.

Thanks for the recommendations!

I just listened to E.S.T. a few days ago. I am really impressed by the song "Leucocyte - Ab Initio" even if it doesn't sound anything like Tord Gustavsen Trio... but it's great nontheless.

I haven't heard the new (and sadly last) E.S.T. yet - its meant to be quite different to usual, and very good. So just as a warning it may not represent how they normally sound...

I would like to recommend the norwegian jazz-trio in the country. i like it much more than Tord Gustavsen, myself.
