Looking for new speakers for my bedroom, don't know where to start

So it's getting close to christmas time, and the one thing I'm thinking of getting myself for christmas are some speakers. I don't know what speakers there are out there. I have a pare of logitech thx speakers and they distort badly when I want to turn them up loud. I play a lot of metal music, as well as other types of music. I was wondering what the most decent speakers I could get and what's the price I'd be looking to pay for them. I don't know my price limit, because I don't yet know what I can get at a reasonable price. Help would obviously be appreciated. Thanks.

These Genelec 8260A would do quite well. So you do need to specify some kind of budget range. There are always better "decent" speakers for more money, and everyone's definition of "decent" is different.

What source will you plug these into? Default laptop sound? An external dac?

Any room placement considerations? In other words, where will you put them in your bedroom and how much room do you have?

Also, room for an external amp such a receiver?

Any interest on eventually upgrading to 5.1 surround for movie watching?

I will be using them on my desktop, and they will be up against the wall. My price range is about 300 dollars, maybe more depending on if it's necessary. I have room for a receiver. I will plug these directly into my computer. They will mainly be used for music.

If you don't have room for the speakers to sit out from the wall at least a few inches, then stay away from rear ported speakers which need room for the port to breathe.

If you shop around, it's possible to find the KRK Rokkit 6 G2 version on sale since the newer G3 version has come out.

One motivation for why (some genres of) metal goes with Genelec - some bands use it.

 
For $300 though options are a little limited, but I had a lot of fun with my $150 Swan D1080 MkII 08. Only reason I sold them is because I might move out of the country after my MA thesis defence to work on my PhD dissertation, and I don't want to leave it to someone in the family to handle the sale locally in case I post it near my departure and it isn't sold by then. I'm missing it right now actually, but knowing the buyer is probably listening to Iron Maiden on them in his condo instead of sitting in a box here at some point gives me some comfort. I imagine the MkIV version might be flatter in response so I might end up getting those, or the KRK Rokit 6, when I move out.
