So in the day I owned a pair of Grado SR80i's and I loved them. Didn't really care for the open air design because noise bled in/out.
 
Anyway I'm on the market for some budget cans.
 
I'm looking at Audio-Technica ATHM50RD or the Creative Aurvana Live! set.
 
I'm leaning towards the Audi-Technica even though they're a little more expensive.
 
I'd like some insights on how they compare, and how they compare to the Grado SR80i's.

Neither sounds like the Grado.  Indeed nothing else does.
 
The CAL! is more balanced.  The M50 (regardless of color) has a "v" shaped sound signature, with its mids recessed and the treble and bass emphasized.

Ok new question. How do the SR80i's compare to the SR80e's?
 
They're only $100.

They are similar, but the the e has more bass and is a bit less bright than the i.
 
Too bad--just a few hours ago they were $20 off at BuySonic for those in the U.S.  The SR 125e can still be had for $120.

I don't have my money right now I'll have it next week.
 
Also going to get that FiiO X1. I think I'll opt for the SR80e's. They're cheaper than the M50's, plus I listen to a lot of rock/metal and since I was already spoiled by the SR80i's, I might regret passing over the SR80e's.
