While iam a professional engineer iam quite new to the world of external DAC that do not feature XLR inputs and require a flightcase to transport.
I got the Hip dac to see what its like but iam very unimpressed this is not due to bad quality but personal taste ofcourse.

I have a tendency to buy warmer headphones for my personal listening but while the bass should extend deep i like high definition mids to really bring Kerry Kings guitar forward.

The ifi hip dac unfortunately does not treat slayer very well when combined with a V-moda(odd choise perhaps but sound is subjective right). The Hip works great with Kz zs10 pro IEMs wich just proves my issue with this DAC as i experience these IEMs as sibilant and overly bright on their own.

So with a summary of my struggle behind us lets get to the point.

Iam looking for something small that i can leave on my headphone cable and just plug in when i need it without worrying about charging a second device (my phone being the first)

I am looking to balance out my warm headphones without sacrifising bass range(range isnt the issue, quantity is)
My budget is 200 euro altho i can go over budget by 50 euro if it buys me something a class up.

I have considered:
Lotoo paw s1
Ibasso dc03
dragonfly red or even cobalt if its worth it.

but iam quite new to these devices.

The issues i have with the hip dac mostly show up in Slayer, Baest, cannibal corpse, morbid angel, you get the idea, noisy loud stuff. Kick drums just get boomy, bass loses some definition, guitars can be hard to distinguish.

Yes i know the m-100 is a bassy headphone with recessed mids but i have had good results playing analog. Leading me to believe my DAC is to blame.

I play from qobuz
