anyone compare 3.96 to 3.96.1 to 3.97 alpha versions? does 3.97 sound better and is it stable. Please say the exact version when making comparisons.

Don't worry about it, you are not going to hear any difference between close versions of LAME. 3.96.1 fixed a few minor bugs in 3.96 (you can check here for all the gory details if you are interested), but still very unlikely that there would be any audible difference between the two.
3.96.1 is the latest 'stable' version so go with it. I would stay away from the alphas, no real reason to go there unless you are equipped to help in the testing effort.
