I am a total newb to mp3s - I downloaded and am setting up EAC as per this great instruction page I found:

http://users.pandora.be/satcp/eac-qs-en.htm#quickstart

It says to download LAME from here, but under the recommended 3.97b1 version I don't see one labeled for Windows:

http://users.pandora.be/satcp/eac-qs-en.htm#quickstart

I tried looking on Hydrogen and other places but the more I read the more confused I get. Since EAC and LAME are so popular I would think it would be very easy to find out where/how to get it but I can't seem to find anywhere saying "LAME for Windows XP - Download here", which would be nice.

(and what is a "compile"?)

Thanks a lot for any help.

LAME is just a compression algorithm, it isn't a program in the sense that you find a .exe, install it, and then start clicking on buttons. There are a lot of front ends that currently support/use LAME; these are probably more along the lines of what you want.

Exact Audio Copy (EAC) is a program in the usual sense, and if you're new to all of this, it's probably what you're looking for. I think that EAC uses the LAME encoder by default when making mp3's -- someone correct me if I'm wrong. If not, it is trivial to set the program to do so. It is also fairly trivial to set EAC to encode directly to other formats such as OGG, FLAC, etc.

Hope that helps a little.

Ahem. Of course a precompiled version of LAME for Windows (to be found on rarewares.org, for example) is a full-blown Win32 application, just for the command line (Win32 console app). Neither an installation routine (I've been able to unzip archives for myself long enough, thank you very much) nor a graphical interface are required for one. And of course you can very well use LAME manually, it's just more comfy with a frontend that accepts files per drag'n'drop and saves the command line parameter combinations you typically use. It doesn't save you from finding out which parameters to use, though that isn't too difficult when starting from a guide like this.

Isn't that a more convoluted way of saying exactly what I already said? If you're trying to tell me how to define a program, I am prepared to spit on you. A certain degree of simplification is usually preferred when describing something to someone for the first time...

Winamp Pro. Uses the LAME codec, rips the CD, turns it into an mp3. Very easy, very reasonable price.

Thanks for help. OK, so I need 3.97b2. On the rarewares site there are a bunch of downloads in that section. Do I need to download the bundle plus ALL of these other files, or just certain ones??

From Rarewares:

Encoders/decoders built using LAME 3.97 beta 2:

Bundle: includes lame.exe, lame_enc.dll (ICL4.5) and lameACM.acm (MSVC6)
2005-12-22
Download (557Kb)

LAME 3.97 beta 2 DirectShow Filter: MSVC6 compile. Includes batch files for Registering/Unregistering the filter. You should read the text files before installing and using.
2005-11-29
Download (116Kb)

LameDropXPd v2: This is built using the revised encoding setup dialogue. It also includes the fixed decoding routines and will accept OggVorbis files for transcoding to mp3(just drop them like any other input file) - Generic is MSVC6 compile and Standard is ICL4.5 compile.

2005-12-02
Generic (206Kb) Standard (266Kb) Source (183Kb)
lame.exe fixed for .mp2 and mp3 decoding: lame.exe only (ICL4.5). For mp3 and mp2 decoding, this now yields the same output as foobar2000 but the error checking remains unchanged.
2006-01-08
Download (180Kb)

lame.exe - modified to use INI File Setup: This .exe uses an '.ini' file to set up the preset, Scalefactor and Experimental Y option to be used in encoding. This is designed to simplify usage and to restrict the encoding options available. Includes the decoding fix, as above. (ICL4.5)
2006-01-08
Download (174Kb)

lame_enc.dll modified to use INI File Setup: This dll uses an '.ini' file to set up the preset, Scalefactor and Experimental Y options to be used in encoding. This is designed for use with applications that use the dll but do not provide full preset support. This version provides support for all 20 VBR presets and preset INSANE. See the enclosed text file for usage. (ICL4.5)
2005-12-24
Download (154Kb)

nLAME.dll for use with winLAME (ICL4.5 compile)
2005-12-17
Download (97Kb)

---------------------------------------
For MacOS X: A universal binary which will run on both PowerPC and Intel powered Mac's compiled by krmathis. Static build with these optimization lines: * PowerPC -> "-fast -mcpu=7450 -faltivec -Wall -fno-common -ftree-vectorize" * Intel -> "-fast -march=i686 -msse3 -mfpmath=sse"

Thanks. So are those other 'improvements' for applications other than EAC??
