Hey folks,

I have been a fan of Head-fi for some time now, but im kinda new to the forums. I love good audio and headphones. I have had this pair of Porta Pros for almost 3 years now and i just love the damn things. but i have to mention that i have had my share of problems with them as well. the main issue i had with these is to do with the foam pads. I have large ears and when i first got the Porta Pros and wore then my ears used to hurt really bad after a while simply because the foam padding was too thin and did not provide enough cushioning between my ears and the plastic driver enclosures. the problem got worse with time because the foam was wearing out and a few weeks back the foam padding completely disintegrated. and so rather than putting a new set of the usual foam padding on to them i thought of ways to improve the comfort levels. and while i was going through my stuff one day i came across these pair of Numark HF125s which i bought some time back. i never listened to the bloody things as they are too bass heavy and sound all muddy. but the foam padding was really soft and comfy. so i took them apart and thought of a way to put the padding on my Porta Pros.

The foam padding, but these were too large to fit directly on to the porta pros. so i had to remove the plastic plates which were holding these in place in order to fit them on to the pros.

these plates were held in place my three screws

the drivers them selves were glued on to the plastic plates and had to use some force to remove those

i had to cut the middle bits out in order to let the sound waves flow more freely

all ready to put everything together

and the all i had to do was just align the driver to the center of the plastic plate ans glue them together. you can even see the adhesive sticking out a bit in the pictures.

IMPROVEMENTS : i have to say that these pads make a world of difference when it comes to comfort. now i can wear these for hours without my ears hurting at all. and i have to say they even look much better now.

CONS : as you can see now these are not as portable as they use to be. they do not fit inside that bag anymore which Koss provide with the Porta Pros.

THE SOUND : i had no idea that such a small modification could make such a difference. the bass has really tightened up now. if you use an EQ and crank up the lows your eardrums actually start to hurt. but it does not sound muddy at all. the mids are really apparent now than they used to be. and you can feel how the sound is well directed towards your ears now. usually since the porta pros are rather open in the front it feels like the audio scatters all over the place but as the new foam padding creates a barrier around the front of the driver the audio feels more directed towards the ears. i feel like this is important when you listen to highs. i have to say that after the modifications, drums sound incredible with these. i listed to a drum solo by Mikkey Dee, the drummer of Motorhead and i was blown away. even vocals and acoustics sound wonderful now. and i have to say im really happy with these now. the sound signature is perfect for my taste. i listen to a lot of metal and these are perfect for that now.
