K701 and K702 are NOT the same... See frequency response graph.

Many of you say that there the same headphones, but the graph here shows slightly different.  Are they wrong?  Are the ear pads different?  Maybe the detectable cable has some effects?

I think the graph is just showing slight differences from manufacturing tolerances between two different phones

I've had both and they never sounded the same to me. It could just be that my old k701 had much more burn-in.

BTW here's another interesting graph I found on google's cache:
(doesn't look accurate at all based on what MY ears hear. Strange.)

You can measure the same exact headphone several times and get different results.  Stereophile and Hi Fi News in the UK have talked about this before.

And headphone.com's graphs themselves are open to debate.  Look at the Grado SR60i vs the SR80i, SR125i, SR225i, SR325i, etc.  You'd be led to believe that the SR60i has bass that extends lower than any other model, whereas it's the exact opposite that's true.

Let's say I take the graph at face value then.  :-)  I owned a pair of K701's and I found the treble emphasis they had not faithful to the original recordings I listened too.  So I'd prefer the 702's because they have a little more bass and a little less treble?

I don't think so.

In fact, the K 702 is nearly identical to the K 701, differing only in finish and headphone cable.

I would think they verified the accuracy of that statement before they published it as part of the review.

Could always ask AKG too.

Just out of curiosity, I checked out the specs, and they are identical:

Quote:
Sensitivity 105 dB/V
Frequency range 10 to 39,800 Hz
Rated impedance 62 ohms
Max. input power 200 mW
Net weight (without cable) 235 g (8.3 oz.)
flat-wire voice coil
patented Varimotion™ two-layer diaphragm

x2. Or one had been recently used and the other was brand new since frequency response changes with use. Then there is the issue of whether such a difference is actually audible.

The differences are 2.5 to 3 db on the bass, and about - 1 db around the 8-10KHz. Looks like the 702s are more balanced compare to the 701s...

In every measuring system, there are always three sources of variation...the variation between the items being measured, the variation caused by the gauge doing the measuring, and the variation caused by the person taking the measurement. But the drivers are IDENTICAL to both the K701 and K702. AKG has stated this several times and many who have heard both...myself included (my friend Ross...baka1969) owned both at the same time and have confirmed as much.
