I just got an incredible buy on a used in very good condition Ah Njoe Tjoeb 4000
Super Mod CD player with upsampler which I got on Audiogon for $850 including shipping, remote & manual. I think this retails for close to $1500 with the modifications & upsampler. If anyone has this player or has heard it, I welcome your comments, positive or negative. The one good thing about buying this used is that it has had ample burn in time (the seller used this for over a year). I'll post my listening comments after it has arrived & I've listened to it for a week. If somehow, I still prefer my Pioneer PD-59 player over this, besides reselling it, I don't think I will look to buy another CD player again based on how I wasn't happy with any of the other solid state ones I tried out (Rotel RCD-1072, Eastsound CD-5, Pioneer PD-65 & others) over my Pioneer Elite PD-59.

As you can see posted at the bottom in color, I owned one. I spent a year with it one December. It sucked bigtime. Very very dull and lifeless. And "yes" it was fully broken in and was functioning properly. It's sound and mod is horrendously outdated by newer technology. For good reason, this player is not at all popular on the HeadFi board. Entirely too much tube muddle in the mids and bass and had poor high end definition. No wide or deep soundstage. No air or seperation around instraments, ect. It just did not do a very good job at all. I kid you not.

It's not even close to as bad as Mikey01 says it is. Mine has good speed and details. In fact, rather than being muddy, I would characterize it as almost bright sounding. It is not bright in a harsh way, there's just a lot of detail in the high end. The low end is pretty balanced with solid, tight bass.

I actually can't believe what a terrible impression Mikey has of this player. It is a lot better sounding than he would have you believe.

It has more detail and aggressiveness than my Linn Genki. I am a fan of relaxed players as far as HP goes, so I listen to the Linn more through my HP. But for speakers I often use the Ah!.

enjoy.

John.

I'm not offended by anyones opinions on this & in fact, if I notice similar good or bad things people post after I listen to it, I'll know it's just not me & make my decision to keep or not keep a little faster. Did both of you hear with with the upsampler & different tubes then the factory standard because they said that makes a difference in the sound. If it does sound too bright, I'll definately get rid of it because the sound on my Pioneer PD-59 is perfect in regards to the audio tones. Anyway, thanks for both of your replies. I should also add I listen strictly from speakers not headphones if that makes any difference.
