Having heard what lossless FLAC files sound like out of an iRiver vs. higher bitrate VBR mp3's on an iPod, I decided to jump ship from using an iPod to the iRiver.

There are trade offs.

•The iRiver is a fashion faux paux, and just doesn't match hot pants.

•The interface is not as smooth and as easy to use as the iPod's.

•Analog output from Headphone jack has an annoying hiss that can be hear very easily with efficient IEM's.

•The iRiver is much thicker, hence they won't fit in hot pants. Therefore a new Head-Fi Utility Belt (HUB),a la Batman Utility Belt, will have to be constructed.

But what I gain is.

•Optical Digital Output to use as a portable transport at meets. (quite jittery, but better than nothing)

•The addition of a portable DAC/Amp for use with said Optical output, but will facilitate the construction of the HUB.

•Use one set of lossless files at home, and on the go. (will have to convert all my APE files to FLAC, which will take a few days.)

•Drag and drop! No more futzing with FooPod.

So, anyone else jump ship from iPod to iRiver? or vice versa?

Ed - your leaving Jasper994 and I on ship!!!

Well, more power to you. I just can't see myself pulling away from my 5G iPod anytime soon. As for the HUB - let's get together and build two. I could certainly use one as well.

Let me know when you get it so we can have a little mini-meet.

LOL, since the HUB can be carried with us everywhere, we can have it anywhere.

Say at a Starbucks? You order the Pelligrino.

I have to test Jasper994's 5G iPod for DC offset anyways, seeing how his E4 mysteriously had one channel go dead recently.

Indeed. I wouldn't mind having a HUB actually.

Starbucks sounds like a good idea and Pelligrino is my drink of choice.

Yeah, it would be a good idea. Most of these dead channels are being caused by the 30GB 5G iPods. Really wierd if you ask me.

I use the Iriver h120, H320, IFp799 amongst some other minor machines.

They are all reliable and tough little beggars. Ive chucked them around while travelling. They've been in heat, cold. Great machines.

One big criticism of them in the UK has always been the menu system. Its a load a rollocks. Once you're used to an Iriver, the menu system is dead easy.

Put a mini amp on and listen on some decent headphones and they go!!

Edit: Is that picture you? You look like a model from 'Village People.'

I'm going to use Rockbox.

That's the plan, since the headphone output is pretty bad. Hence the need for the HUB.

I use iPod shuffle for flash portability and iriver CD player for higher quality playback. One of the reasons I like the iriver was optical output AND it has a remote. I don't really feel like taking my unit out of my bag with all the wires and contraptions so this is very convenient.

HEAD-FI!
It's the place to get down!
I said HEAD-FI!
Where iRivers abound!
HEAD-FI!
It's an optical chain!
And we swear, we, are, not, insane-

HEAD-FI!

OK, that's going on the front page from now on.

Ed, all you really wanted is an excuse to buy more portable gear, admit it.
