I agree, but maybe that's just the msrp and we'll be able to find it cheaper from an online retailer perhaps. Also, the gold version is more $$ for some reason. I like the video playback, but with only 2 gigs it's more suited for short clips of loved ones or friends. Still, for something that's similiar in size to the Nano, it's another option to think about. If it was only cheaper than the Nano then I think it would be worthwhile. Otherwise, the Nano seems like the better deal.

Jens of Sweden used to OEM Nextway products (the MP-300 was an OEM of the Nextway NMP-612T that I own). I wonder if this is an OEM of something Nextway produces. If so, I have some expectation that it'll sound very good as the Nextway products I've tried have all been impressive.

The MP-500 is a rebranded Dyne Tuny 8.

According to this review of the MP-500 an hour of video converted to the required small-screen format takes up about 100MB, so the 2GB version should be capable of some limited video use.

Interesting that JoS are marketing it as scratch proof (while Dyne does not say this of their OEM version) - I´d like to see a test of that.

Overall I think it looks pretty nice, but suffers from a built-in battery. While this is bad enough in itself, in the case of JoS it would make me especially worried, as the company´s history has been interesting enough that I would not be too sure about it still being in business when my battery needs replacement in two years. On the other hand I feel quite sympathetic towards them because of their fight against DRM, so buying one would feel a bit like supporting my side in a war...

I noticed on the back the player is assembled using phillips screws. I wonder if the battery would be easy to upgrade.

This was also questioned in a swedish forum and Jens himself answered that they have made some changes with scratches in mind, think he said something about a special varnish. Dont remember exactly but Jens actually dared one user to try and scratch it. He never dared though.

Thanks, nice to hear they did more than just print their logo on it. Although 'scratchproof' is a rather strong claim...

Still, great that someone spends some thought on this.

By the way, I did not know that JoS had any forum presence/activity. Being a half-Swede I sure would not mind reading a Swedish forum - could you possibly recommend one?

Does the player use flash memory or a small HDD? It looks interesting - I've been thinking about replacing my X5L because I don't feel comfortable using HDD players.
