Hi - anyone have an opinion on whether these are worth $48 shipped (Kmart special)? They would be purchased without hearing (not an instore item). I'm assuming they are a step up from the reference 410 (given that the MSRP is theoretically $100 more - hopefully not just for style) - and do come with a nice case and real leather trim.

I've looked on the forum and seen one fairly positive review, and a few comments about how they look funny or are probably low end AKG and pretty crappy (although most weren't based on listening tests). Also - one fairly glowing review from CNET's Australian website, and 5 or 6 generally positive reviews from Amazon. In general though, there isn't a heck of a lot on the Internet about them - and I was wondering if anyone else had tried them out (beside the one positive review

Not for me - for my 13yo son to listen on his I-pod, so anything will be an improvement over his Sony earbuds.

Other options considered are the $50 AT M40fs (B&H) - although I'm reluctant because of the 1/4" jack, or waiting to find Sony MDR-V60 in the $50-60 range.

TIA
Reg

I've tried my friend's JBL 420's for perhaps no more than 10 minutes but from what I do recall they sound significantly different from either M40fs or V6 (two of which I demo quite often). The latter two are studio monitors that sound quite flat and transparent while the JBL's sound more fun but not as refined. JBL's are more portable and easier to power. So it depends on what your needs are.

IIRC JBL Reference 410 is rebadged AKG K 26 P, which is complete midbass muddy garbage. If it is (and looks definetly tell they are), then that model is not worth it. Not sure about 420 though.
