Ive been using my Stax setup for a while [lamdba pro > srm-1 mk 2 > nforce icon udac > computer] and recently an imbalance of sound on the left and right channels popped up, whether im watching movies or listening to music.

First, I tested with a pair of speakers lying around [cheap speakers > nforce icon > computer], and there was no imbalance.

So I tried going to the Equalizer for my nforce in the Windows 7 sounds:

Adjusting these had no effect whatsoever on my sound for either the headphones or speakers which strikes me as odd.

I haven't tried any new audio drivers yet but honestly seeing as how theres no problem when the speakers are hooked up I'm pretty certain its an issue with the headphones or amp. Any ideas as to what could cause this and how to fix it?

I'd guess amp.  Although, come to think of it, the uDAC does seem to have issues handling channel balance at low levels.

Hook up your Stax setup, and go like this to troubleshoot.

Max your Windows volume.  Set your setups volumes to normal listening settings.  Reproduce the issue.  From there, turn up the uDAC.  If that fixes the issue, there's the problem.  If not, turn it back down to normal levels, and turn up your amp.  If that fixes the issue, there's the problem.

I did this and the sound remains proportionately unbalanced regardless of the volume levels on the dac or amp (it sounds about as if the slider were set to 20% left 80% right)

The best thing you can do from there is to test other phones through that amp, or those phones through another amp.  That's easier said than done, I'd assume, with those phones...
