I know there are MP3 players running from SD card, but is there a player which could run from (non-dedicated) USB flash drive?

Yes. There may be more, but the one that immediately popped into my head was the Lexar JumpGear.

And of course most flash players basically ARE non-dedicated USB drives with a dac and a headphone jack attached. You can use just about any of them as simple USB storage sticks if you want to.

Could anoyone confirm that Lexar JumpGear COULD work with non-dedicated (non-Lexar) USB drive?

Well, that might be due to the form factor, i.e. that other USB drives don't fit the slot. That's easy to ovrecome.
