i haven't really been keeping up with the DAP scene, but i'm curious as to whether something with roughly the Nano's specs has come up yet THAT DOESN'T require use of iTunes.

has there..?

You don't have to use iTunes with the nano. Try Winamp or Ephpod, or Anapod Explorer, or Sharepod to name but a few third party alternatives, all of which work just fine. For photos use CopyPodPhoto for example.

Sandisk Sansas have 2 or 4 GB flash memory, and are cheaper than the Nano. Not as pretty-looking, but the interface is workable and it's a good value. I don't think they have line-out. If other Sandisk players are any indication, you can use it just like a flash drive - drag and drop files.

They should sticky a thread with the title "iTunes Alternatives" and then list all the alternative programs with a brief description of key features.

For the love of God, I'm sick of this question.

IPODS DO NOT REQUIRE ITUNES.

foo_pod
Winamp iPod

And there are plenty of Linux tools as well.

I don't think foo_pod supports the Nano....unless things have changed recently
