Is it worth it to use an hdmi audio extractor instead of the 3.5mm in my laptop?

I've been looking at something like this to use with my laptop: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00KBHX072/ref=s9_psimh_gw_p23_d0_i2?pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_s=desktop-1&pf_rd_r=0HA6Y8X0CTGDE4CNMRQP&pf_rd_t=36701&pf_rd_p=1970559082&pf_rd_i=desktop

Right now I just use the stereo mini port so I was wondering if HDMI would be a noticeable upgrade.

That device is just a DAC that uses HDMI input rather than the more common USB or SPDIF. HDMI, USB, and SPDIF audio are all digital so they are all identical. A USB DAC makes more sense to use with a laptop, so you should probably look for a USB one instead.
