I've read the original thread and no one really answered the question. Instead, the thread ended over people arguing over optical degradation. So what is the verdict? is it worth $100 to buy the 1212m?

furthermore, what is the best 1/4 -> 1/8" adapter? if possible and where to buy? thanks.

I think the general opinion is that the 0404 is fine for music playback, with the 1212M being a slight step up. Some people actually prefer the 0404. The 0404 is supposedly more dynamic while the 1212M is more refined/smooth/detailed. Most people agree there isn't a big difference if you're just going to use it to listen to music. I'm going to go for the 0404 unless I can talk myself into spending significantly less for the AV-710 which a LOT of people like and it only costs $25.
