Hi guys, my nine-year-old H340 has me in a bit of a dilemma, and I'm hoping I can get some advice from you all.
My first DAP was a RioVolt SP250 (remember them? lol). I was so impressed with the sound quality, feature set, and warranty support (three failed on me), that when it eventually died, I decided to get another product from the same company. Rio was either sold, or changed their name, to iRiver, so I went to see what they had to offer. This was around the same time that Apple's iPod was gaining popularity, so I wanted something with similar capacity. This is why I chose the H340.
At the time, I was amused with the SRS feature and was quite happy with the sound quality that I was getting from it. Then I discovered RockBox, and my life was changed forever! hehe I honestly didn't think that the H340 could get any better, so here's to the guys who developed, and maintain, RockBox... You guys ROCK! (pun intended)
So here we are, nine years later, and I've yet to come across anything that sounds as nice as my H340. I've changed the battery, I've modded it to, unsuccessfully, enable the USB OTG feature, and now the hard drive has me a bit worried because it's whining a lot louder than before. I work in IT, so I'm really impressed with how long this thing has lasted. I went looking for a replacement drive and stumbled across an SSD from KingSpec which will fit it. I thought "Perfect! More storage, less power usage, faster response, no interference from moving parts...".
So here's my dilemma... The SSD that I have in mind is 128GB, and costs about $100 US from Amazon. By the time I pay for shipping, and duty (I live in Barbados), I'm approaching half the price of a new DAP, like the iBasso DX50. Does it really make sense to spend this kind of money on such an old device? How much longer can I really expect it to last? The DX50 is an impressive device, but I don't want to spend that kind of money to then be disappointed by how it sounds, compared to the H340.
I almost forgot... I use a set of Klipsch Image S4's with my H340.
Comments, suggestions?
