iPod Touch (running 4.2.1 OS) Options

I have an old iPod Touch that I would like to use as my player but get the best sound out of it. I want to at least all of the following:
 
Have the L2 LOD
Have Fiio E6 Amp
Would like to install a better player (either Equilizer or EQu)
 
Will either of these EQs run on this older version, should I bother or is it time to upgrade to a new player (either a new iPod touch, Cowon, Colorfly or Other)

equalizer runs smooth even on older ipod touch generations. equ only runs fine IME if youre using ipod touch 4th gen and above

Why don't you upgrade the iOS, the newer one has more preset options, but if you don't want presets, I am not aware of any EQ programs off the top of my head...

My version of the touch will not Update any further. Can it be rockboxed? Is that a good option?

i dont think idevices can be rockboxed? just go ahead and buy the equalizer app =)

I cannot install the EQ app on my iPod (too old - neither version will install and I can not update the iOS any higher) - so I guess it is time to look into a new Player Combo.

If you already have the LOD and amp, then buy a 4th gen Touch....it's a  great sounding device.

Personally, I would go 3rd gen with lod and 4th gen as stand alone.

Forgot I have an old iPhone 4G, just using it as the iPod and shut off all other services.

Perfect! Just set it in airplane mode and leave the wifi off if you use it as just a music player.

Exactly!! I do have a Fiio E6 but thinking of pairing this a better DAC/AMP like E07K, iBasso D-Zero, Cowan J3. Any suggestions for a good DAC/AMP in that kind of price range? I would also like to get a little better LOD cable but I am not seeing many around. Any Suggestions on where to get a decent ($30-$50) LOD Cable?

No need for a DAC, really.....the one in the iPhone is quite good. A better amp, sure.....an E11 would be a nice step up from the E6 and it is still pretty affordable. That's what I use with my iPods. I stick with FiiO LODs too.
