Are there any differences between the 1G LOD and the 2G LOD? Instead of me saving up/waiting for the iPod touch 3rd gen when released, I might just get an E5 via my iPod touch 1G LOD.

Currently I am using iPod touch 1G>Senn IE8

Here are some possible options I might consider.
Possible options:

iPod touch 1G>Fiio E5>IE8
iPod touch 1G>LOD>Fiio E5> IE8
iPod touch 3G (Hoping the 3G will have the same sound chip as the 2G)>IE8

Which would you think is the best option? Also, might buy some ATH ESW9's, so would the E5 show significant changes?

From my experience, with the M-Audio Q40s and a 3Move, the 2nd Gen LOD sounds better than the first gen LOD, but it's only better by a tiny tiny tiny bit. From the music I usually listen to (Jpop, JCore, JRock, Hip Hop, JRnB), I find the 2nd gen improves with the tightness of bass, and a bit of clarity on the higher notes, but its not a difference that I would spend money on another Touch for. Only reason I might consider another Touch is the improvement of the processor, but I don't really need it now that I bought the DS for gaming.

Personally speaking, if I was in your shoes and I didn't plan to upgrade the E5, I wouldn't bother with the 2nd Gen. But at this point, I would just buy the second gen just because it's newer.

Edit: There is hissing from the headphone out, but I don't get hissing from the LOD (both 1G and 2G). Considerably less hissing from the 2G Touch but still there (headphone out).

Thank you very much for that informative post. The only reason I might get another touch is for an OLED screen, no other features that I can think of will interest me. I don't need a 2G touch, since I don't need features like the speaker and that, might as well go for an amp and LOD.

speaker is rubbish to be fair

love my 2G touch though - how much an improvement do you get via LOD + amp vs headphone out

I'm not looking for volume as my Senn PX100s are driven fine by the internal amp - just better SQ

For your signature, although it is purely my opinion, the Cowon S9 has a great headphone out. It, to me, is better than the iTouch 2G's headphone out that everyone has been raving about. And the screen that uses Gorilla Glass and OLED, is simply amazing and durable. I would have gotten the S9, but when I bought my Touch, the S9 wasn't out for a while, and I need my 32GB. I hesitate to buy it now because I like the functionality of a jailbroken iPod, and WiFi.

Which amp do you use?

Personally speaking, it's a big difference. If you can discern a 128kbps MP3 from a 320kbps MP3, then you will be able to tell the difference. First thing, the highs are much better. Second thing, the bass has more impact and it is tighter. Third thing, which I don't know is true, it saves battery life. I have my volume completely off, which should send very little power or disengage the onboard amp since I'm only using line out. I'm not sure if this is true, and I haven't tested it either. If you're looking for a cheap sound quality increase, getting a cheap LOD from Ebay is definitely the way to go.

I just want mp4 playback on there since all my videos are in mp4... If that happens via a software update then I might purchase one.
