I have an Ipod that I'd like to use at work with a set of speakers (or Ipod gadget speakers, or what have you). There is room on my desk for a pair of speakers, and on the floor for whatever other pieces of equipment you'd recommned. Budget is up to $500. My musical interests are hard rock and heavy metal.

I'm a Grado guy, and I like a punchy, exciting sound.

If anyone has any recommendations, I'd appreciate it.

Im not sure these would fit the grado sound signature, but for the lower price range, I think M-audio's powered monitors are incredible sounding for each price range. Once you get to 800 dollars or so, I know there are better, but you might really like theirs. Theyve got a 300 dollar pair, and a 500 dollar pair, i believe. they are definitely more neutral than the forward grado sound though, and they aren't going to have bass that will shake the floor, but IMO, that's a good thing.

Give me the rough size of your desk. Also nearly forgot If the B&W 601's are way to big then maybe you could try their cdm 2 I think it's called. They are smaller.

Hang on I will try and dig up some links for you.

Nearly forgot here's B&W's "dinky" speakers

Lol - dude, I guess I gotta sign up for team dinky, cuz that's what I've got in my work rig. Actually, take a look at the mini-receiver I've got hooked up to them. Talk about dinky!

Anyway, it ain't bad at all. As stated in pretty much all the reviews, it's a modest system that certainly is a very solid performer. I actually fed it with my iPod for a long time, but man, the system really responded to the HeadRoom Overture.

Best,

-Jason

Postscript: For the original poster, the speakers will be about $300 ~ $350 for the pair, and the mini-receiver about $350 ~ $400. I'm no expert, but its nice punchiness with pretty good bass and clear treble does remind me more of Grado than any of my other cans.

well I am thinking of building a speaker rig again and one of the options so I don't overspend was to use my stealth, buy a hugeeeeeeeeeeeeeee dual monoblock and use a pair of "Dinky" speakers, But I will use my Raptor with the ipod mini and then get a pair of these dinky speakers on the cheap. Although I am bidding on a Meridian G08 for kicks to see if I can get it on the cheap.

It's pretty much a normal sized cubicle desk.

I went to Fry's curious to see the speakers they had...man, there are too many computer and other speakers to choose from. And I'm not sure if I can hook the Ipod up to all types of speakers using RCAs from the dock or if I need some special setup.

Hmm I wonder if is it possible to use a headphone amp to drive speakers like the LM1's????

You can pick up a set of JBL Creature II 's off of Ebay for about 40-50 bucks, direct from JBL. I havn'e heard them, but they are supposed to sound pretty good. They also have iPod look and won't take up to much desk space.

Do you have co-workers that are close to you that may be bothered my loud music? I wouldn't blow to much on a speaker system if I wasn't going to be able to crank it up a little bit and enjoy it.

Edit:
If you like mega-superduper bass you could go with a set of Logitech Z-680's!

I'm not sure how loud you can play your music at work, but IMO, for work, especially a cubicle, there is no need to spend $800 to get very good sounding speakers that will run straight off the iPod. My personal favorite are the Swans 2.0 powered speakers. You can get them for under $200. They sound as good as any $500 speakers I have heard and heave great build quality.
