Ok
had the nw-e99 for a month and thought i would try out the shuffle.
Bought a 1gb off ebay.
I have had an ipod 4g before but wasnt impressed with the sound, i can say without a doubt that the shuffle sounds better to me than the 4g 20gb.
It has more pronounced bass and more detail imho.
Design
shuffle wins , looks and feels very nice , solid and soooo light. Buttons give nice response. The sonys shuttle switch is nice but the group etc buttons are too small.
Ease of use
Tricky , i run Windows me ( i know ) and was pleased to find a winamp plugin for the shuffle and it works great , drag and drop , it doesnt support autofill yet but that is promised. I dont like itunes and winamp to me is perfect.
Sonicstage has never bothered me the way it seems to bother everyone else and it is easy to use.
A draw(for me) - however if using itunes you may find it easier.
Build quality
Sony all the way, shuffle will be scratched to hell in no time.
Value
My sony cost £125 the apple £100 , i feel the Sony is actually better value , you get a usb cable , a case, a hand strap and more. The shuffle should ship with a plug charger and a case add these and you are up to £140.
Sound (the big one)
Shuffle wins - just. it is more detailed and clear with loud volume and no background hiss at all! (compared to sony e99 mp3 playback - not atrac).
My sony hd1 and the shuffle are on a par, i have upgraded my hd1 and used the volume hack - now sounds sweeeet with 192kbps mp3..
the lack of display
Not an issue for me as i use it in the car on shuffle, i would not buy a shuffle as a stand alone player however , i think a sony, muvo ,iaudio would serve you better but as an addition to a jukebox for keeping in your pocket it is perfect.
My sony has now been sold, i now own a ipod and it will be getting kept in my pocket with nice e888lp earphones so i wont be mistaken for a ipod ponse.
PS. i put all my artists on in althabetical order so easy to find.
