I have heard that the ipod mini has even thinner(lacking bass) sound then the already thin sounding ipod 3g and 3g models? Is this true, I thought the mini had the exact same hardware in terms of sound chips as either the ipod 3g or 4g?

Is any of this true?

Thanks!

The same stuff as the 4G iPod, AFAIK:
24-bit Wolfson DAC (WM8975) ...3G has an earlier gen. Wolfson DAC
FireWire chip: Texas Instruments TSB41AB
memory: Hynix HY5V56D SDRAM - 256Mb (32 MB)
power supply/battery management: Philips PCF50603HN

If Chumley's data is correct, I'd think it would make it a no-brainer for the 20 GB iPod over the mini. I looked at the mini for a bit but when you consider the kind of money they want for it and for just a bit more, you can have 4X the HD space, I can't see the attraction for the mini. Also, don't want to start a flame fest with this but the mini is about the most unattractive player on the market....IMO. Just plain and boring...no personality at all. Everything considered, I'd do the 20 gb iPod if I were in your shoes. Come to think of it, that's exactly what I did this past xmas. JMO though.

Couldn't agree more!

I'm a bit paranoid about the hard drive models and its lifetime vs solid state (pun intended =) mini model. So although I finally got hard drive one, I still see the attraction of mini - and even more so when they get to at least 10gb.

I really don't see the attraction of the mini either...too expensive, not enough space, and it not very um...mini. It's the largest microdrive players (I think...one of them at least) too.

The Mini is a hard drive model, FYI.

I don't know if anyone else can chime in here, but there is a significant difference in sound quality between the 4G vs. the 3G and mini. If you don't have the audio defect, then the 4G has more detailed sound. Perhaps there are better parts to complement the chip?
The shuffle lacks the detail of the 4G but has more bass.
