So in my quest to replace the crappy windows iTunes and finally be able to copy my music the way I wanted (using folder/filenames only) I found a couple of good softwares:

First off, Anapod. Nifty software which does the trick, but its not free, and the trial version can only let you copy 1 song at a time (eek).

So I went looking for a FREE soft which would let me do the same, and I found Ephpod. I thus proceeded to copy 20GB of music organized the way I wanted on my iPod, and I have to admit this soft works very well

Not as nifty as Anapod, but it does the job, and its free.

Try it out if you hate iTunes or your mp3s have crappy ID3 tags

I’ve been using iTunes for 2 months, and have been able to figure out ways to make it do everything I want so far. Where is iTunes lacking that people may hate it?

I find iTunes amazingly slow. It also lacks little things, like copying multiple folders to the library, detecting and not copying duplicates etc.

Maybe there are ways around these?

j.River Media Center. $40. Some slightly annoying iPod tics, but good support and possibly the most capable audio organiser / player on the market. The best $40 I've ever spent on software and makes Foobar irrelevant as far as I'm concerned.
Yamipod. Free/Donateware. Runs directly off the iPod HDD to allow you to drag & drop music on top of the Yamipod window. Some bugs, but it essentially does what it does on the tin. New version just out which I haven't tried yet.
Sharepod. Ditto. Slightly less immediate than Yamipod and dependent on other files which you'll need to install on the iPod yourself, but does the same thing.

- If you have an amazingly slow PC, iTunes will be amazingly slow.
- MP3 Tag Tools is a good tool to write different version ID3 tags, but development on it seems stalled. Probably there are other better options around.
- You can drag & drop multiple folders on top of the iTunes window.
- No software I'm aware of detects duplicates in different folders as you're copying.

For me, only iTunes leverages the uniqueness of the iPod. I have no problems with it.

Anapod Explorer is not my. I got it for my girlfiends to use to teanfer music to her Ipod. It does freeze at time though. Nothing catastophic but it was annoying. It also costs a few bucks.

I then tried DbPowerAmp's Sveta Ipod Manager. This is probably a better one. I have been happy with it so far. It costs a bit. I would be happy to settle with it

I haven't tied the JRiver one but heard good things about it.

Definitley not itunes though. That garbage gummed up my PC way too much. I thought SonicStage was bad, but Itunes is maybe worse. Shame on Apple.

I have been using anapod manager for nealry 2 years now and I love it... I never even installed itunes having played with it on friends computers... I never found it anything but frustrating. I am sure there is likely newer, free, or better stuff out there now but anapod works just fine for me and I am more then happy with it.

For the sake of being easy, it doesn't give me the option to remove the un-needed and, most of the times, incomplete ID3v1 tags.

What do you need ID3v1 tags for?
