Dear All,

Several people were talking about this combo and since I just got my iPod today after an interminable wait, I thought I'd share first impressions. The '6s are getting more comfortable for me, so I must be putting them in better. I've only been listening with a Sony PCDP so far, without any kind of amp.

1) The included iPod ear buds suck. They're just too big to wear comfortably. As I was wearing them walking around the sound kept changing; at first I thought something was wrong with the iPod, but when I put in the Ety's everything was fine.

2) The iPod itself, as everyone under the sun has said, is beautiful. It just feel so nice in your hand. The packaging is one of the neatest things; it's as nice as the iPod itself. As for the sound, I DON'T hear the infamous whine, but I've got to say I'm not listening for it if you know what I mean. I don't want to hear it, because I'm sure if I do it'll ruin it for me. I would say that a concern about the whine shouldn't stop anyone from getting one, esp since Apple seems to have promised a fix (the supposition is that it's a software problem since there is no whine with uncompressed AIFF files).

3) The Ety's driven by the iPod: very nice. The Ety's certainly will reveal poor encoding (a lot of which I hadn't noticed before), but the iPod seems to drive them reasonably well. I have to have the volume bar up around 70% for reasonably loud playback. There was some concern that the Ety's would be too revealing. I guess that depends on what you will be satisfied with. If you're very picky the problem will be with the MP3s not the iPod, so you probably wouldn't be interested in any MP3 device.

In summary:

The iPod and the ER-6, just as I'd hope, are perfect together. Having this many songs in my pocket with the kind of isolation the '6s provide is just wonderful for on-the-go listening. I highly recommend the combo to anybody else addicted to MP3s.

BTW, the first beta of the Win XP software for using the iPod with a PC should be out in about a week.

Best,
--Mathew

Glad to hear the combo works good. M 6's should be here any day. I also have not heard the "whine" and I've had mine since day one.

I must agree with you mathewlu, iPod + ER6 is indeed a great combo. The electronics of the iPod are dead silent using the Etys.....no hiss or any other noise. I have, however, heard the infamous "whine", but it is only audible at the fadeout of a song for a second or so when there is almost silence. For me, it is not audible at all with music playing.

I don't hear any hiss either probably because the whine is louder! Sometimes it bothers me but not when I don't think about it? Does that sound weird?

Joelongwood, so you really feel the ER-6s are really close to the performance of the er-4ps? I do not have golden ears, so I don't want to spend more than I have to.

70% OMG that is loud for etys...are you sure?
Please for the love of god reduce the volume...hearing loss is something you dont want or worse tittinus.

I have this permanent ringing sound in my ear since ages and im only 17...though I've learned to ignore it an I never hear it anymore because of adaptation its a terrible thing to have.
Take care my friend...

Disturbed,

70% is not extraordinarily high for the iPod. The Apple's default start up volume is set at 50%!

70% on my pdcp is a different story.. I'm afraid to go that high on that thing.

First of all, I don't think I have golden ears either. At my age, I'm sure my hearing is not as acute in the higher frequencies as others on this site. To my ears, the ER6s are damned close in sound quality to the 4s. They give me that unmistakable Ety sound. What then does $269 get you? It gets you slightly deeper bass and more transparency. There is a more forward, "edgier" sound to the ER6s when compared to the 4S. Is that worth the price difference between the 6 and the 4? Only you can be the judge of that. All I will say is that, if all I had was the ER6, I'd be very happy with the sound. Hope this helps.

do hiss/noise effect the sound quality of the device? [i think theres just annoying to hear]

.... cuz i have a 1-year old panasonic portable cd player and apple ipod..... when its reading the audio cd and gaps between the songs .... i hear can "hiss" but during playback... i cant hear the "hiss" and noise

I think HeadRoom will ship internationally, did you check?

I would rather not do that because these things are not that cheap to start with. I don't know if you have an idea what an overseas delivery is going to cost?!

As the iPod is not here yet maybe someone will start selling these things over here as well ...

don't hold your breath, lulu

etymotic is a damn small company if i'm not mistaken. they don't have too many retailers, although they are getting more. i believe Music Direct now sells etymotic stuff, although more expensive than at headroom.

you should inquire with etymotic directly as to retailers elsewhere.
