Hi,

Some days ago I got a great offer of a 4th generation iPod 40gb or 20gb. I know most of head-fi's members are a bit against iPod, but I think those big fellows are great for $170-200 especially in compare to the Rio Carbon which I could buy for $175.

The guy who made the offer said that I could choose between a 20gb for $170 or a 40gb with dock for $200 and I don't know which one to choose.
Firstly I don't have loads of money, so it could be the 40gb is not worth it. Also the 20gb extra isn't a big deal to me.

So here comes the dock. Is it worth $30? From what I've heard, you don't need it really. You can put your iPod vertical and that's it? Can you connect an iPod without dock to the boxes of your computer? Can the iPod run on AC power (straight of the socket) without dock? Are there any other advantages?

You all see, loads of questions. Could somebody answer some of them for me?

Thx,

The dock is certainly not required. It provides a way to stand up the iPod and creates a pass-through for the USB/Firewire cable. You can do everything you need to do without the dock, except one. The dock provides line out which is useful if you want to connect the iPod to a home stereo or amplifier.

Doubling your ipod capacity and getting a dock for $30 more is definately worth it. Don't forget that the ipod can also be used as a small portable hard drive, at least for storage or moving files around. So having that extra 20 gigs is useful. Also if you rip cds at lossless or aiff/wave the files are quite large and will fill that sucker up in no time. The dock's line out is a better quality output than the headphone out for running through a stereo, amp or powered speakers, plus you could probably sell it easily here or on an ipod site.

Get the 40 gigs. You don't really need the dock (the SiK din or imp is a better alternativve), but the extra gigs are nice. By the way, are you sure this guy is on the up and up? Why is he selling it for so cheap?

Company went bankrupt, everything at 50%. Some products were in sealed package.

So I can't just bring my pc speakers and my iPod without dock on vacation and listen there on AC power? Cause if it can only run on the battery, I'm buying a dock maybe..

You can run the iPod on AC with or without the dock.

The 40 Gb is significantly thicker so if size is a concern, go 20 Gb... otherwise the 40 Gb is a no brainer, and if you ever sell in the future you'll likely get your $30 back plus.

I like the dock, but if you use one of the majority of cases out there, it's too much trouble to take the iPod out to place in the dock.

The dock retails at $40. That's a ridiculously good price for a 40GB iPod and a dock. Yeah. That's ridiculous. I am jealous out of my mind right now. :P If you're planning to get amp/headphone equipment, the dock is a good idea for the lineout.

(So yeah. Get the 40GB.)
