Hi all,
Like many, I've been lurking for some time, and I've been impressed by your community -- although I'm more than a little worried about its potential impact on my wallet. I've been using a SR-60 out of an iAudio X5 (Rockboxed, FLAC and OGG) for years, and when I started looking for an isolating IEM for working at a coffee shop etc., I stumbled my way here. (Thanks to what I read here, a RE-400 is on its way, and I just gave my sons PortaPros to replace their Apple earbuds for Christmas -- I want to start them out on a halfway decent footing.

I studied French Horn in high school and college, and my favorite thing was playing in the orchestra, the bigger the better -- I loved the immersion of sitting in the middle of the instruments, the depth of it, the layers, turning-my-head-to-the-cellos, etc. (I also loved sitting right in front of the organ pipes at church growing up, so full-body immersion seems to be a thing for me!) I really haven't found that experience very well since. As I've been reading the forums here about headphones that are good for classical and choral primarily, I started to wonder if getting a better set (and amp) might allow me to chase that kind of in-the-middle-of-it-all, swamping-you-with-the-music immersion -- is that even possible, or a fool's chase?
So far I'm intrigued by the idea of something like an HD600 with some sort of amp, but I'd be open to suggestions; right now where I envision a listening spot I'd need to use my x5 as my source (probably FLAC via line-out?). I don't see myself using these out-and-about, so I'm not worried about isolation or portability terribly much (that's what the RE-400 is for, although I don't know for sure if they'd benefit from a portable amp?). I envision a budget that might stretch to $600-$700 or so (please don't tell my wife)? I've seen threads somewhere recommending classical recordings, which I'll track down again; I'd welcome any recommendations of "big" symphonic recordings that pair particularly well, if anyone has a favorite.
