I've noticed that the iFP players come with a music management software and are not reconized in explorer as another detachable drive that I can just drag and drop songs too. I have an older iHP-140 with the round button on the front for volume, song selection, menu navigation, etc. That player is reconized as another drive. I liked this lack of management software primarily because I could carry files of other types than what the player cna read AND I can use the player on any computer I want.

With this management sofware with the iFP series, can I use the player on any computer I want, or will I have to erase all the music and restart as if I had just bougt the player?

you have to put other firmware (UMS) on the player itself. That erases all the song that you've already loaded.
From what I've read there are a few things that get a bit less. The speed to load songs on it will get slower. And there's something with the recording quality (forgot the specifics). And I'm not sure but I think that with the software you can name radio station. With the UMS firmware you can't.

Anyway. There's more info on it on the iriver site. :

Just a note that IRiver.com (global site) carries UMS updates, and the Iriveramerica.com site doesn't. If I hadn't checked the global site for fun one day, I would have still been using the proprietary software.

UMS firmware does a couple things

1. transfer speed is slower (actually almost half the speed)
2. recording bitrate is capped at 96kbps
3. you do gain the ability to drag and drop on any computer but you can't use the IMM software anymore

i went back to IMM firmware for the transfer speed increase... the software is easy enough to use

Ok, I'm going to continue using the IMM software untill I need to use the player on other computers, thanks.
