Hi,

I had a LG V20 with a Quad DAC. I was quite happy with this as an on to go solution. Recently, the phone failed (believe it or not, the phone melted/nearly blew up charging). LGs response has really soured me on their phones, as has their lack of firmware support and (comparatively) bad battery.

I’m looking at my options for headphone jack phones. My partner just got a Oppo Reno2 Z here in Australia. It looks pretty great price to performance. It has a headphone jack too, and expandable memory. I’ve only given it a cursory listen, but it sounded fine.

Is there any way to get any info on the DAC/audio setup the phone has? As I say, I liked LGs audio, but their dismissive attitude and refusal to help makes me not want to consider them.

If anyone has any suggestions or info, that’d be great.

Cheers.

Your lucky to have the option to get this in your region...they continue to ignore the US for mobile division. I'm not sure what the DAC is in that Reno phone, but i'm pretty sure it has the Nokia OZO audio treatment so should be no slouch. I woudn't be suprised if Oppo threw in their own DAC into this phone like the one in the LG. It also has their great innovative charging and camera system.

The only "negative" (depending on your tasks) is the mid-range processor Oppo used--the LG V line would use the current top Snapdragon.

Unless a phone is advertised as using a discrete audio processor I would generally assume they just use the DSP built into the phone's processor, so in other words nothing special

The V20 has the ES9218 from ESS while the non quad DAC versions use WCD9XXXX from Qualcomm.
Modern DACs have such high quality sound output that a particular DAC is unlikely to exceed in any particular metric that is audible.
I know this is head-fi where people claim all kind of audiophile BS, but headphones make a huge difference than any DAC.
